Bric á Brac
Bric á Brac’s music puts together sonic snippets and significant moments from his life in a highly intriguing way. Just like its namesake, seemingly random elements are ornamentally intertwined to reveal the bigger picture like a jigsaw puzzle, or a bouquet of assorted & personal sentiments.
His debut record ‘Specimen 001’ owes much of its existence to many cherished moments, significant places, special people, and an eloquent poetic nostalgia that binds it all together beautifully with the mucilage of the artist’s own unique expression. Immaculately integrating his own individuality into a larger collective coherence, Bric á Brac has unmistakably put a part of his soul into the record, which makes it resonate with a profound and sincere sheen.
Spatialize
Spatialize’s sublime musical expression is a result of early exposure to his grandmother’s piano, discovering the digital keyboard & the power of sampling, being a bassist in bands, and last but not least “being left to his own devices” (literally). All of these constituted vital parts of his journey and germinated into a vast body of work that displays his signature open, organic, psychedelic sound.
The two albums featured here are ‘Squaring the Circle’ which consolidates some of his earlier works and ‘Searching for the Source’ - a nod to the eternal search for meaning that mankind has embarked upon. The UK-based artist also shares several gold nuggets of wisdom from his three-decade-long experience as a musician, and gently confirms the fact electronic music can really flow from the heart.
Absalon
The Israeli music scene seems to be the gift that keeps on giving to the rest of the world. Absalon is a prime example of such an artist who bends the conventional norms of electronic music, gently sailing into new sonic shores.
His latest EP ‘The Mind’ released on The Rust Music Label is an absolutely meditative yet intense trip that does full justice to the complex human construct that the record is named after. The producer brandishes floating melodies over crystalline soundscapes that unfurl in irrefutable organic detail. For those of us who dig well-engineered, emotive and experimental music, this EP will effortlessly lift your spirits off the ground and keep you there for a while too.
Smigonaut
Smigonaut’s latest EP ‘New Escape’ brings a pleasing melodic melange and a nonchalant swing into bass music - a rather unique sound that the Boston-based electronic artist is well-known for.
Striking a highly refined balance between the experimental ingredients and a solid 2&4 stomp, this three-track trip combines exciting sonic elements in a manner that will send you shimmying across the floor and at the same time, never leave you lacking for low-end. Intelligent, sensitive, groovy and energetic, ‘New Escape’ is one of the hottest EPs to drop in the left-field neuro bass sonic sector this year.
Avilente
Berlin-based Avilente’s ‘Along The Shores Of An Infinite Memory’ takes us through a poetic and pensive passage of ideas of universal karmic memory, akashic libraries and quantum physics alike. Believing in the premise that “As conscious beings, we receive and give back into this ocean of memory and this cycle repeats endlessly”, this ambient downtempo journey is a sonic visualization of standing and drifting back and forth along the shorelines of the infinite cosmic memory.
Flore
Flore’s ‘Rituals Remixes 1 & 2’ were born out of the success of last year’s ‘Rituals’ album. These tracks are imbued with a focused and powerful reverie that bear testimony to her long and compelling career.

She also shares her influences and some rudimentary advice, while herself being an inspiration to all.
Gardnsound
Multi-genre music producer and bonafide all-rounder Gardnsound continues his ambient journey with ‘Atmospheres’, a radiant and breezy 6-track long waft. The album was created completely with hardware instruments, and fully hands-on without automation of any parameters to get a humanized feel.
The artist, who is also known for his association with glitch-wizard and Ableton guru Mr. Bill, runs a multifaceted company ‘Easy Peasy Pro’ which provides personalized and customized technical & repair solutions and happens to be a prolific proponent of the DIY philosophy which he intrinsically wove into the creation of this record.
Ecention
Swiss sound-sorcerer Ecention dedicates his debut album ‘Ancient Knowledge’ to our ancestors and cultures, whose deep wisdom and universal knowledge set up the foundations of modern human civilization as we know it. Using layers of organic instruments and textures combined with electronic sounds, he narrates a tale as old as time that takes us from the origins of humanity to our existing state of edification and material development. The album is out on ‘Merkaba Music’, a label well known for organic electronic music.
Jinniyah
Gio Makyo’s newest album “Shade” in the avatar of ‘Jinniyah’ explores the melancholy of loss and the concepts of zen & space through a unique mix of chillstep and downtempo trance. Inspired by the literary & cinematic works of romantic poet and politician Lord Byron & surrealist filmmaker David Lynch, and the fearlessness of author Arundhati Roy, the hauntingly beautiful and ethereal music of Jinniyah can transport you to a moody and mysterious world.
Dystorizon
Valencia-based producer Dystorizon is an exhilarating new breed of Indian electronic musicians who aims to break out of existing notions and make you “un-expect the expected” when it comes to creativity and musical expression.
His debut EP ‘Escape Velocity’ provides the necessary momentum to cut loose from conventions and hurtle towards exciting and unknown frontiers. As one of the ‘Bonafide 7 Collective’ core members, he is well on his way to causing ripples and waves that will set the tone for the future sounds of electronic music not just in his home country but around the world.
Thomas Bingham
Composer and electronic musician Thomas Bingham explores the condition of insomnia and the blurry line between wakefulness and sleep in his debut EP ‘Fractions of a Moment’.
Conceptually deep and intriguing, the young French-American artist shows a musical maturity that is quite remarkable, also drawing a parallel between the sleep-deprived state and the feeling of stasis that many of us have been experiencing during the lockdowns and curfews of the past year and a half.
Through his sonic introspection, the artist attempts to illustrate a sincere and sympathetic picture of some of the harder moments of life and even succeeds in capturing the underlying beauty in these moments with this ambient exploration.
Syntheshwara
'Syntheshwara' signifies the intelligence that resides in all electronic music equipment. In 'Roots Vol. 2', the Bangalore based artist and beatmaker invokes this 'deity of sound and synthesis' which he created for his own home studio: "the Temple of Sound", and explores an interesting sonic space by sampling mesmerizing Indian melodies over laid-back beats. His 'workflow' truly lives up the to 'flow' part of the word, as the entire album was done in 24 hours, in one take, with no re-edits or re-arrangements. The ‘Roots’ series is equivalent to a refreshing dip in a lake, or a peaceful trek in the mountains.
INNESTI
"Filament and Place" by Innesti is, as described by the artist, an exploration of the emotional connections that exist between the places and people that exist in our lives. It is a meditative and cathartic transformation of ‘half-remembered dreams and a longing for places that no longer exist’, into sonic forms called ‘Ambient Sound Grafts’, by grafting them together with natural field recordings and organic synthesis. Innesti has a subliminal way of making listeners feel like they have travelled through time and space, all from the comfort of their own literal and metaphorical homes.
Krameri
Chennai based singer-songwriter and producer Damini Chauhan continues her electro-pop journey as ‘Krameri’ with a pensive, coming-of-age, yet light-hearted sounding new EP titled “Feels Like Amnesia”. The multi-faceted artist who hails from Gujarat, and has a penchant for the latest musical trends, can also be spotted alongside a stellar lineup of musicians in AR Rahman’s latest musical extravaganza “99 Songs” handling modular duties for (arguably) India’s finest and most well-known composer. The EP beautifully balances a bold simplicity with honest expression, and most definitely leads her one step closer to a bright musical future.
Rumpistol
“After the Flood”, the sixth album by veteran Danish musician and composer Jens B. Christiansen under his primary alias 'Rumpistol', is in many ways a turnaround from his previous efforts. After a career of over 15 years, mainly in the electronic music scene, a computer screen triggered burn-out led him to reinvent himself and his music-making methods. The resulting record turned out to be therapeutic as well as artistically rewarding for Jens, as he went back to his instrumental roots and composed the entirety of this album using the piano as the musical core.
“After the Flood” has an uplifting, ethereal quality to it, yet remains tangible, almost tactile, in its use of organic, non-electronic instruments and textures. As refreshingly new this musical direction is for a Rumpistol album, it’s also somewhat familiar-sounding to fans of the artist. The melodies seem to ebb and flow, undulating around each other in that particular Rumpistol way that point forward (and perhaps even upwards, celestially), yet evoking memories of past works. “After the Flood” isn’t merely music to casually relax to. Although the album sounds very pleasing to the ear, it’s an engaging and thought-provoking listening experience.
KiloWatts
Eight Experiments is a jovial audio journey concocted by veteran musician KiloWatts that achieves a perfectly mesmeric sync between and electro-organic sound and a melodic atmosphere. This breezy and soothing summer jaunt is one of the most exemplary pieces of electronica that I have laid my ears on this year.
Pan Electric
Pan Electric’s "Music For a Busy Head 2” is the follow up album that comes 2 decades after its predecessor and turns out to be an essential ambient work with a strongly growing relevance with every passing moment that the modern human being spends alive. The music makes it’s presence powerfully felt without the need to impose upon the ears, and emphasises on two of the most the most underestimated yet essential musical tools, space or silence and dynamics, by entwining ambient textures with the versatile palettes of the guitar. Of all the sounds that would be bouncing around in your cranium lately, this record unassumingly catches your attention and denotes the acme of ambient music as of 2020. Give yourself the gift of cleaning up your auditory headroom with this sympathetic ambient symphony.
Man of no ego
