Gary Husband
Innerview #2 from the Rhythm Section is with a rare gem of a musician, humble human, keyboard virtuoso, electric drummer and musical maestro, the one and only: Gary Husband! His personality and passion playing music shines through like a diamond, and like a fine wine, keeps getting better! Gary is the living personification of Fusion and a total musician's musician. He is one of the best improvisers in the world, on both drums and piano! Having played with some of the world's most innovative artists like John Mclaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Joe Zawinul, Oz Noy, Jeff Beck, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Jack Bruce, Gongzilla, Level 42, the Mondesir Brothers, Larry Coryell and even Eddie Van Halen, Gary has grown into becoming an extremely innovative band leader, as well as an inspiring performer.
Gary speaks about his beginnings in professional drumming as a 16-year old, the challenges he faced as a musician and multi-instrumentalist, playing with greats like Allan Holdsworth, Billy Cobham, Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, his love for F1, his Indian cultural connection, open handed/ambidextrous drumming, how he integrates his multi-instrumentalism into the larger picture of music, recent and current projects and collaborations, and much more. His artistic journey, sprinkled with a good sense of humility, and copious amounts of integrity and inner strength is a benchmark for all musicians and drummers.
Morgan Agren
What connects Frank Zappa with “Djent” music? The answer is none other than the amazing drummer Morgan Ågren, a musician who is as real as they come, having a sense of humour and playfulness that is precariously balanced with his aggression and virtuosity. He has been the occupant of coveted drum thrones alongside artists like Kaipa, Frank Zappa, Magma, Devin Townsend, Fredrik Thordendal, Crimson ProjeKCt (Adrian Belew, Tony Levin), Squarepusher, Bill Laswell, Tosin Abasi, Steve Vai, Trey Gunn, Fleshquartet, Dale Bozzio, Mike Keneally, Dweezil Zappa, and last but certainly far from least, his own musical soulchild project with his inseparable musical soulmate Mats Oberg. The Mats & Morgan story is nothing short of a musical fairytale: their meeting, the conception of their musical endeavours, the story of two kids from a small town in Sweden who became musical cross-genre trailblazers and exponents both individually on their respective instruments as well as with their synonymous project. This musical love affair and brotherhood is truly a benchmark for musicians and friends alike.
Morgan shares the story of his humble beginnings on the drums, his early musical influences, meeting and playing with Frank Zappa at a young age, the famous Swedish TV-show “TRUM!" that catapulted him into worldwide fame and also birthed the style of music known as ‘Djent’ along with Fredrik Thordendal of Meshuggah, his connection with Indian music and culture, his take on ‘Pop’ as a genre and the pop gigs he WOULD take up, commerciality and trends in the music industry, the evolution of drumming, CHOPS/FILLS, electronic music, Youtube/Instagram drumming, his solo drum album ‘Batterie Deluxe’, his experience at Alex and Allyson Grey’s COSM, current tours with Devin Townsend and recent/future projects, and more. Here is the first ‘Innerview’ from the “Rhythm Section” series, with the drummer extraordinaire who is one of my personal childhood drumming heroes - Morgan Ågren.
