Mayur Narvekar
Few artists can claim to be truly unique and original, and Indian electronic musician Mayur Narvekar is definitely among them. The maverick producer, who is known as the ‘don of Indian bass music’ and the ‘kingpin of Indian neuro’, is still going strong with his two-decade-plus long career. He has worked under different aliases like ‘Bandish Projekt’ and ‘Mosillator’ and has been a key figure involved in radically changing the landscape of electronic music in India.
With his work in the brand new Amazon Prime Video show ‘Sherni' and a plethora of projects in various creative situations under his belt over the past years, it is evident that he regularly pushes the envelope of musicality, invents new sub-genres and has time and again shown his individuality, versatility and artistic vision.
His latest EP ‘Spectrum’ that released recently on the esteemed 4NC¥ label under his purely electronic avatar ‘Mosillator’, naturally happens to be some of the most intense and conceptually intricate bass music out there today.
Jinniyah
Gio Makyo’s newest album “Shade” in the avatar of ‘Jinniyah’ explores the melancholy of loss and the concepts of zen & space through a unique mix of chillstep and downtempo trance. Inspired by the literary & cinematic works of romantic poet and politician Lord Byron & surrealist filmmaker David Lynch, and the fearlessness of author Arundhati Roy, the hauntingly beautiful and ethereal music of Jinniyah can transport you to a moody and mysterious world.
Daniel Troberg
Daniel Troberg is an LA-based producer, DJ and Dublab radio host, with over 2 decades of experience in the world of electronic music. His recent release ‘Cracker Jacks’ which is out on experimental electronic label and multidisciplinary arts collective ‘Detroit Underground’ is a bold and edgy techno-esque jaunt that manages to hint at and even draw out a subtle sense of humour from the realm of machines. His extensive background of computers and hands-on knowledge of noise-making machines like the Eurorack Modular, Octarack and Hydrasynth, the latter two of which he has been directly involved with, has put him in an effortlessly commandeering position when it comes to making circuits sing, shriek, bounce and bobble at his will.
Daniel has also just put out an ambient album “Cold Entry” which shows his depth and versatility as an artist. He says this about the record: "These songs explore aquatic themes through slowly moving, lightly distorted, vast, noisy and sometimes melodic soundscapes. Water, depth, and pressure have been the main inspirations for this album." Being an avid scuba diver, he has masterfully translated the underwater diving experience into a truly immersive soundtrack that is quite contrary to, and yet reciprocal & synergetic to ‘Cracker Jacks’.
Yung Raj
Indian beatmaker and bonafide wunderkid Yung Raj explores existentialism and the monotonous side-effects of the pandemic with his usual animated flair in his new EP ‘Unalive’, which just released on esteemed Bristol label Gutterfunk Records.
An artist who continually lives and thrives outside the proverbial box right from the start, the beatboxer turned producer makes an enthralling contribution to the well-renowned record label started by D&B/breakbeat veteran DJ Die, who along with the likes of Machinedrum, Om Unit, Devonwho, Knxwledge and Kiefer, inspired Raj to blaze his own trail towards being one of the finest producers and electronic musicians in the country. With recent releases on heavyweight labels like 4NC¥ as well as minting his first NFT, Yung Raj is proving to be a force to reckon with on the world stage.
ThirumaLi & Mona Mula
Malayali Rap Star ThirumaLi lashes out against slavery with “Adima”, a hard-hitting, raw and soulful collab with Indonesian-Dutch singer Mona Mula. The rapper, who is one of the main protagonists of Kerala’s hip-hop movement, and is known for being a voice of activism in his social circles, condemns enslavement throughout the history of humanity and while raising awareness on the issue, he also urges the newer generations to take a stand and root out this condition once and for all.
The track is an impressive union of seemingly different worlds for a common cause and definitely hits the point home in a more than convincing manner. Mona Mula’s powerful chorus provides a solid melodic hook that propels the listener away from the darkness of this inherent man-made condition into a hopeful brighter future.
Dystorizon
Valencia-based producer Dystorizon is an exhilarating new breed of Indian electronic musicians who aims to break out of existing notions and make you “un-expect the expected” when it comes to creativity and musical expression.
His debut EP ‘Escape Velocity’ provides the necessary momentum to cut loose from conventions and hurtle towards exciting and unknown frontiers. As one of the ‘Bonafide 7 Collective’ core members, he is well on his way to causing ripples and waves that will set the tone for the future sounds of electronic music not just in his home country but around the world.
Littlecigarette
Some people spend all their lives trying to escape from the darkness and their demons. Others learn to live with them, make peace with them, dance with them, and turn them into art. ‘Littlecigarette’ happens to be one among the latter. As for his moniker, in his own words: “…As an artist, I’d like people to try me — like a cigarette — taste me, smell of me and conceal me from their parents, get high on my schmaltzy fumes, becomes addicted or flush me down the toilet when they wanna quit me.“
His artistic vision and sound is a unique brew; stylistically ‘Glam-punk’, Rock n’ Roll in attitude and a storyteller and entertainer who sin(g)s, raps or meanders in between. His brand new single ‘Fur Coat’, the first release of his upcoming album ‘Omega’ is an honest and relatively jovial track that is equally underground as it is catchy. Most of all, he is unabashedly true to himself - a trait that the ‘king of the jungle’ himself, Drum & Bass legend Goldie, obviously saw in him before he signed him onto his record label. Just as another one of my favourite artists of all time said,” Be yourself.. is all that you can do...” He couldn’t have been more right.
Ekorce
Ekorce’s latest EP ‘Imago’ is a true testament to his love for nature in all its simplicity, complexity and sheer awesomeness. The listener is taken through themes of transformation, metamorphosis and rebirth via vehicles of surreal symbolism and splendid sonics, also alluding to the last year and a half as perhaps a period of chrysalis for humanity.
The artist, who recently completed his PhD in Neurobiology, likes to use raw, crunchy, organic elements, unusual rhymic patterns and textures to enunciate his amazement at the patent beauty of creation, particularly the chaotic yet delicate wing movements of butterflies. The EP is a window through which one can perceive and marvel at such often overlooked occurrences.
LIL FISH
French music producer and beatmaker LIL FISH is somewhat a different kind of fish in the vast sea of electronic musicians. With 3 albums and several remixes under his belt, the artist is attuned to creating organic trip-hop inspired tunes with a surrealistic touch that comes from his love for nature.
For me, the music of his latest album ‘Organic conjures up visions of exploring a forest, a feeling of adventure, and being lost and found at the same time. Give this a listen and discover for yourself the untold stories that your soul seeks to tell.
Thomas Bingham
Composer and electronic musician Thomas Bingham explores the condition of insomnia and the blurry line between wakefulness and sleep in his debut EP ‘Fractions of a Moment’.
Conceptually deep and intriguing, the young French-American artist shows a musical maturity that is quite remarkable, also drawing a parallel between the sleep-deprived state and the feeling of stasis that many of us have been experiencing during the lockdowns and curfews of the past year and a half.
Through his sonic introspection, the artist attempts to illustrate a sincere and sympathetic picture of some of the harder moments of life and even succeeds in capturing the underlying beauty in these moments with this ambient exploration.
Gaudi
On the centenarian anniversary of the Theremin, Dub exponent Gaudi fuses his two of his biggest passions, Dub & Reggae and the Theremin to produce a legendary album that is as eccentric as the instrument itself, and as eclectic as his massive career that spans over three decades. An enigmatic instrument that carries along with it a dark yet beautiful piece of history, the Theremin is an instrument like no other. Associated by default with eerie movie soundtracks and avant-garde concert music, and brought to the mainstream by rock stalwarts like The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, the modern musical maestro Gaudi along with his equally exceptional long-time collaborators masterfully adapts it with skill and reverence into a perpetual union with his beloved Dub, resulting in a unique ornament of a record. This is definitely one for the ages!
Brokenblender
Brokenblender’s ‘Blending Realms’ is an exciting journey through seven different sonic realms that converges seamlessly in the Psy-bass domain. True to his name, he incorporates a multitude of (other-)worldly influences and merges them into his signature broken-downtempo style in a unique way.
Subliminally drawing from his expertise as a professional chef, creating new flavours by mixing and blending ingredients while retaining their original essence is second nature. So feast your ears and minds on the buffet of sound that is Brokenblender.
nervous_testpilot
Melody, accessibility and ‘tentative experimentation’ are the elements of electronic music that ‘nervous_testpilot’ has always been drawn towards. Coming from an established background of creating soundtracks and sound design for video games through his company ‘Mode7 Games’, “Information Technology” is his first release on the Billegal Beats Label.
This foray into the IDM world is only natural for the UK based musician and producer, who effortlessly blends emotive and uplifting flavours with relatively abstract textures and geometric interplays of sound. Inspired by the aesthetics of retro computing as evident in the theme, the EP is a well-crafted piece of music that easily manages to crossover between the likes of mainstream house or trance music, experimental IDM and last but certainly not least, the vast and wonderful world of video games.
Carlos Niño
Carlos Niño is an artist who operates in the spiritual realm and transforms his consciousness and divine energy into art through percussion, poetry, music production and more.
A modern trailblazer of spiritual improv, space collage and experimental jazz, Carlos, with the help of his band of collaborators, channels the vast expanse of natural vibrations on this planet and conducts them into tapestries of sound and space that beckon the listener to raise their awareness and tune in to the boundless beauty of creation.
Syntheshwara
'Syntheshwara' signifies the intelligence that resides in all electronic music equipment. In 'Roots Vol. 2', the Bangalore based artist and beatmaker invokes this 'deity of sound and synthesis' which he created for his own home studio: "the Temple of Sound", and explores an interesting sonic space by sampling mesmerizing Indian melodies over laid-back beats. His 'workflow' truly lives up the to 'flow' part of the word, as the entire album was done in 24 hours, in one take, with no re-edits or re-arrangements. The ‘Roots’ series is equivalent to a refreshing dip in a lake, or a peaceful trek in the mountains.
The Spindoctor
The Spindoctor from Mumbai is indeed a multifaceted and enigmatic personality. Between his two polar passions of being a professional turntablist and a practising doctor lies a polite, humble and talented person, who is ‘just a nerd’ at heart.
The DJ/producer, self-proclaimed as ‘geeky and proud’, has put out his second original - a unique experimental track that holds its own in the thriving Indian hip-hop scene. Supporting raw and powerful verses from Gravity and Poetik Justis, the track contains his signature scratches honed from years of practice and playing to crowds of all sizes. The evidence is clear that the Indian hip-hop scene has finally moved out of its nascence and is evolving into a force to be reckoned with.
Pierre Vervloesem
A true artist makes the most of available resources and existing circumstances to create sincere and meaningful expression. Belgian guitarist and musician Pierre Vervloesem, who is known as ‘the Frank Zappa of Belgium’, does exactly this in his experimental album “Don’t”, where he channels his inner Jon Hassell and brings out a unique, avant-garde sound with the help of only his guitar, bass, a bucket, and a dictaphone. Read that again. In fact, the very same bucket also happens to be featured on the album cover, which shows the transcendental nature of art. Pierre is living proof that human creativity is not only boundless, and in fact, thrives under limitation.
Romanowitch
Hyper-glitch noisemaker Romanowitch released one of the hardest hitting and unconventional sounding EPs of the year so far. In ‘Inner City’ he channels all the angst and uncertainty of the pandemic, along with a plethora of other dark emotions associated with living in the deep end of human ‘civilization’ - the “inner city” of any metropolis - and brings out a sound that is definitely not for the faint-hearted, but one which everybody who has lived in a big city will relate to. His raw and gutsy sound takes the element of noise, both inner and outer, and puts the listeners in a test of their own resilience. Try out the experience for yourself and you may actually feel a sense of accomplishment that conventional music fails to deliver. It is the same kind of feeling that Batman, the dark knight, must have attained when he conquered his fears, the kind we get when we make peace with the darkness within us.
INNESTI
"Filament and Place" by Innesti is, as described by the artist, an exploration of the emotional connections that exist between the places and people that exist in our lives. It is a meditative and cathartic transformation of ‘half-remembered dreams and a longing for places that no longer exist’, into sonic forms called ‘Ambient Sound Grafts’, by grafting them together with natural field recordings and organic synthesis. Innesti has a subliminal way of making listeners feel like they have travelled through time and space, all from the comfort of their own literal and metaphorical homes.
Stonx
With solemn shoutouts to memes, music technology and heavy music, London duo Stonx deliver their latest EP ‘Rings’, a ballistic bombardment in the form of two D&B bangers, “Critical” and “Defiant”.
Having a solid equilibrium between self-learning and music education, they are equally at ease with producing cutting-edge tracks as they are at sharing their knowledge. No matter where the road may take them, these unswerving Abletoneers will continue their noble crusade to spread their colossal sounds across the world.
